Belt/Sash Binding Techniques of Feng Shou Gong Fu

Within the Li Family arts that was taught to me by my teacher Master Chee Soo, the use of traditional Chinese weapons like the Sabre, Straight Sword, Stick, Spear and Dagger were properly the most popular weapons practised, even today by many of my own students.

But alongside the more traditional weapons Master Chee Soo also taught the the Fan, Chopsticks, Belt, Walking Cane/Umbrella and Short Stick. These particular weapons don't look as threatening as the more traditional Sabre or Spear. But for today's world they properly the only weapon that you can carry legally, especially the Walking Cane, Umbrella or Belt.

Master Chee Soo would openly teach the Belt or Sash to his students as most would be wearing them around their waist anyway. But he would always advocate that the Belt/Sash techniques could easily be subsituted with a Scarf, Towel, Tie or Leather Belt. He would also always emphase that  in the Chinese martial arts the weapon is considered to be an extension of the hand, and in the case of using a Belt or a Sash to subdue an attacker. Such techniques like striking, kicking, joint locking or throwing should be combined with the binding, choking and strangling techniques of the Belt or Sash.

Below is an example of a Sash/Belt binding technique that could be applied against a punch.

Feng Shou Quan-gong fu sash technique.

1. The attacker punches towards my face with his left fist. I then use the outside of my left arm to deflect his punch away to my leftside. But making sure to remain incontact with his arm.

Step 1

2. I then quickly wrap the Sash around the attackers wrist, binding it tightly. I then take a hold of the Sash with my own left hand to fully bind myself to the attackers left wrist.

Step 2

3. I then step forwards with my right leg infront of the attacker's left leg, at the same time I punch the attacker in the face with my right hand and then immediately apply a straight arm lock on the attacker's left arm, forcing the attacker to bend over  forwards from his waist.

Step 3

4. I then quickly sweep the attacker's left leg backwards using my right leg to throw the attacker onto the ground face down on his stomach. I then immediately apply another straight arm lock onto the attacker's left arm using my right knee to press down on his elbow joint.

Step 4

The Sash technique above could also be performed with a normal belt, scarf or tie that most people wear nearly everyday as an accessory with their clothing. The practise with weapons like the Umbrella, Walking Cane or Belt are far more important to learn for self defence in today's world rather than the more traditional weapons. I some time think, that students should spend more time practising the more conventional weapons of the Belt or Walking Cane then the Sabre or Spear.

Master Chee Soo at one time would only teach the more conventional weapons like the Belt or Sash or the Umbrella because he felt the weapon at to evolve with the present time.
